5 Things You Should Never Say to Your Hair Stylist

<hair careHairdressers have heard it all and they can probably tell you some seriously shocking stories about their worst nightmare clients. To stay on your stylist’s good side, here are five sentences you should never say.

  1. ”Just take off an inch”
    Don’t say this unless you literally mean an inch. Your definition of an “inch” may be different than your hairdresser’s. Better yet -- show, don’t tell. Point to the exact spot on your body you want your hair to fall. Be as specific as possible and make sure that before she picks up the scissors, you are both on the same page.

  2. ”I cut my own hair”
    No hairdresser wants to hear that. In fact, that’s probably the exact reason you’re at the hair salon in the first place.

  3. ”I have tons of time to style my hair in the morning”
    If this isn’t true, don’t say it. Be honest with your hairdresser so that she can design a new hair cut that suits your lifestyle. If you end up with a style that is more complicated than you can handle with your limited hair care skill set, then you probably weren’t being very clear. The best thing you can do is tell your stylist about your hair care routine and then ask for her recommendation. As a matter of fact, 56% of women say that they seek the advice of their hairdresser before taking the plunge.


  4. ”Do you know what you’re doing?
    Ouch. In order to get a job providing professional hair services, a stylist must get a cosmetology certification. That means that yes, your hairdresser has the experience and training necessary to cut or color your hair. Of course, if you don’t like the end result, you can always go to someone else next time.

  5. ”I don’t care”
    That’s hard to believe. Does that mean you’re cool with green hair highlights or a mohawk? Don’t tell your hairdresser that she can just “do whatever” with your hair.
