4 Common Winter Hair Problems (and How to Fix Them)

hairThe cold weather has finally caught up with us, which means we’ll soon be noticing the first effects of the harsh winter conditions on our hair -- dryness, static, frizz, you name it. To help you keep your locks soft and shiny, here are a few helpful winter hair care tips.

Common Winter Hair Problems and How to Fix Them

  1. Dryness
Skin care and hair care are pretty similar in that moisture is absolutely essential to both. Winter weather and indoor heating will leave your locks dry and your scalp flaky. Using leave-in conditioners and deep moisturizing treatments at least once or twice a month will replenish the moisture your hair and scalp so desperately need to prevent breakage and irritation.

  2. Static Electricity
You know those static fly-aways that stick to your face and stand straight up like they’ve got a mind of their own? You can actually keep those strands smooth and calm by lightly swiping an anti-static dryer sheet over them. Just keep one in your pocket and use as needed. It’s that simple!

  3. Frizz
Avoid over-washing your hair in the winter. If you wash too frequently, it strips your strands of all their natural oils, leaving your hair dry and frizzy. To maintain a clean and fresh look, use dry shampoo in between washes. Remember, you can always rinse your hair with conditioner and skip the shampoo once in a while.

  4. Dullness
As many as 79% of women claim that they use professional hair salon products to keep their color from fading. Sometimes, however, your locks can start to look a little dull just because of the weather. In dry and cold conditions, use products for color-treated hair. Or, if you want to take a more natural route, try apple cider vinegar to add shine.

Ultimately, to keep your hair strong, shiny, and beautiful all winter long, avoid blow drying, apply lots of moisturizing conditioner, and stay away from products containing alcohol, sulfate, or silicone.
